Embodied Interaction: Exploring the Foundations of a New Approach to HCI Paul Dourish Xerox Palo Alto Research Center dourish@parc.xerox.com Abstract As we move towards the close of the millennium, it is perhaps not surprising that we take the “long view” and attempt to find, in the history of HCI, clues to its future. In that vein, this The idea of Embodied Interaction reflects a number of recent trends that have emerged in the area of Human-Computer Interaction. For instance, "tangible computing" (as conducted, for example, by Hiroshi Ishii and colleagues at the MIT Media Lab ), is an area of HCI research where people are exploring how we can move the interface "off the screen" and into the real world. Because of their performative dimensions, sport and music are two ideal domains to explore the social, embodied, and creative dynamics involved in skill acquisition. While they both display different traditions, contexts, and specific objectives, one point of continuity between these areas precisely involves the monitoring of one’s skills, as well as their development and optimization. Embodied Interaction is indispensable for anyone interested in the study of language and social interaction.

Embodied analyses, such as those in this book, remind us of the integrity of the human interactant as a situated, sensual actor, participating in his or her environment and in the lives of other animate or inanimate entities through a range of modalities, of which language is one, and not always the critical one.

One theory, as proposed by Paul Dourish in 2001 in his book ‘Where the Action is’, to conceptualize these recent changes, is ‘Embodied Interaction’. Dourish points out that computing is moving into the social and the physical space, and he proposed the term ‘Embodied Interaction’. 2019-07-16 Interaction: Embodied Facilitation Eva Hornecker Interact Lab, Dept. of Informatics, University of Sussex, GB eva@ehornecker.de Abstract.
